Here’s an answer from Don, who is an agent with Promise Insurance (www.PromiseInsurance.com).
Generally, a coupe has 2 doors (versus a sedan that has 4 doors); but this isn’t always the case. A car is technically defined as a coupe when it has less than 33 cubic feet of space inside. So a car is a coupe, whether it has 2 doors or 4 doors, if it has less than 33 cubic feet of space inside.
Whether or not a car is considered a sports car has to do with its power-to-weight ratio. This is why a sports car is more expensive to insure: it’s generally more powerful.
A coupe may or may not be a sports car; but if it is a sports car, you can expect a higher insurance rate.
